A Harmonious Decade for Kevin McBeth and In Unison
Conductor Kevin McBeth recently celebrated his 10th anniversary as Director of the IN UNISON Chorus. Host Kathy Lawton Brown sat down with him to discuss his musical influences, how he came to IN UNISON, and his favorite memories of working with the group during the past decade.
Kevin McBeth was appointed Director of the IN UNISON Chorus in 2011. McBeth is the Director of Music at Manchester United Methodist Church in suburban St. Louis. He serves as full-time administrator for the Music Ministry, which includes 18 choral and handbell ensembles, involving nearly 500 children, youth, and adults. Kevin has also served as Adjunct Professor in Choral Music at Webster University. Over the past 20 years, he has conducted honor, festival, and touring choirs (choral and handbell) in the United States and Canada. Previous appointments include Assistant Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus and Music Director of the St. Louis Metro Singers.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s IN UNISON program began in fall 1992 in partnership with the St. Louis Clergy Coalition to broaden connections between the SLSO and the greater St. Louis community through partner churches. What began as a pilot program with five African-American partner churches has grown to 33 partner churches today, launched a groundbreaking chorus dedicated to the performance and preservation of music with African and African-American origins, and has provided coaching, mentorship and college assistance to more than 200 youth and young adults.
